What am I Reading:

Alchemised by SenLinYu

The saying goes, “never judge a book by its cover” – well, I did. I saw this book in the bookshop and absolutely loved the cover. Didn't read the book description or anything. It was in the fantasy section, so how wrong can I go by buying an aesthetic pleasing standalone book. So, I bought it. (Gives new meaning on how important a cover can be in marketing).

Then came the reading. Thrown into a world of post apocalyptic confusion. A woman held hostage and mistreated, trying to wrap your head around the science, necromancers and what is really happening. Part one made me question my life choices in more ways than one and I was starting to view the book as kindling for my fireplace. It has enough pages to break your wrists, so I would have a fire going for a while. But the book kept me intrigued and a post on Facebook reassured some readers to just get through part one. In hindsight, part one was brilliant, as it depicts the uncomfortable truth and horror of being a prisoner of war.

Well, at least the descriptions were good, so I continued. Part two was good. It isn't a book I would normally read. Dark romantasy, necromancy and enemies to lovers trope is really not my thing, but the overall arching story kept me going.

But when we finally moved over to part three, which continues where part one left off, I felt lost again. I wanted to read part one to get into the details and to actually understand what was going on and who exactly all the people really were, but I just didn't have the incentive to put myself through it again.

The ending was fine and overall a satisfying read. But through it all I did learn a lesson, read the book description. But I did finish it, which says enough.

So, if you are into dark romantasies and don’t mind falling in love with the living dead, then I would surely recommend this. But it just wasn’t for me, even though I think SenLinYu is a great author.
